Studying the issue of taking charge of presidency by women (in Iran)

Abstract

One of major women’s rights is participation in political and social affairs and taking the responsibilities in micro- and macro-ranks in management, and women have proved fortunately their abilities and competences in many situations in Islamic Republic system of Iran to obtain such responsibilities. In constitution of Islamic Republic of Iran, women have the same right as men to vote and be voted in order to participate and take political and social responsibilities, but as it is implied from article 115 of the constitution, the gender is matter in taking the presidentship as the highest formal post in Iran after the leadership, so women can not take this responsibility. This interpretation is based on religious beliefs and rules of religious jurisprudence.
Therefore, this study, in two sections, deals with the issue from viewpoint of religious jurisprudence and the reasons for prohibiting women from presidentship and studying exactly the viewpoint of constitution, affirming the competence of women and eliminating the wrong beliefs about this issue.
